23 Cats Seized from Feces and Garbage-filled Home

Posted by pjtgrizzly On July - 27 - 2010

The Vancouver SPCA says it will cost more than $5,000 to treat almost two dozen neglected cats and kittens seized last week from an animal hoarder in East Vancouver.

Ryan Voutilainen, manager of the Vancouver branch, describes the condition of the home the felines were taken from as unsanitary for animals and humans alike.

“The filth and diarrhea was piled high on floors, carpets, walls and other items in the home,” he said, adding the residence was filled with urine, feces, mould and garbage.

Investigators, who had to wear masks to protect themselves from the ammonia smells, reported only finding one water source for the animals: a bucket with a steel wool scrubbing pad floating in it.

Marcie Moriarty, general manager of provincial cruelty investigations, says criminal charges will be considered against the owner if she doesn’t agree to stop keeping multiple animals at the home. She says priority is getting people treatment for what is often a debilitating mental condition.

House with Dog Feces Emptied

Posted by pjtgrizzly On July - 27 - 2010

Responding to 102 Ledge St. on Friday after a pit bull bit a 4-year-old boy on the lip, city officials discovered dog excrement on bedding, furniture and the floor, city health officer Heidi Peek said.

Peek detailed what she claims to have seen Friday when inspecting the residence:

It looked as if the children had been walking through dog waste and tracking it throughout the house for some time.

The stairs to the second floor had a film of dried dog feces. Animal excrement was found in all three rooms upstairs.

In what appeared to be a playroom, fresh piles of dog feces and puddles of urine were on the floor. Again, the smell of dog waste “was overpowering.”

The mother, who wasn’t identified in the news report, denied that the residence was unsanitary and said the dog bite was an accident. The pit bull loves the boy and his two younger brothers, she said.

The dog was probably trying to kiss her boy when its teeth caught his lip, she said. The boy was playing in the dog’s water bowl, police said.

Children Taken From Home after 100 Dead Cats Found

Posted by pjtgrizzly On July - 5 - 2010

BLACK RIVER FALLS (WKOW) — Social services has removed three children from a home in Jackson County where 100 dead cats were found in a nonfunctioning freezer.

Sheriff Duane Waldera says filthy conditions and feces from another 17 live cats caused deputies to determine the house was unlivable.

Gabriella Bernabei says authorities are targeting her and her boyfriend because of their Wiccan religious beliefs. Bernabei says the cats were kept in the garage freezer because she planned to bury them. She says she was properly storing the carcasses until she could get to the burials.

The live cats were taken to the Jackson County Animal Shelter. Animal control officer Barb Pfaff says some were too sick to save.

Disposophobia: The secret Epidemic

Posted by pjtgrizzly On July - 5 - 2010

Dis-pos-o-phobia is the relationship of people to their belongings.

Disposophobic behavior ranges from a person’s desire to have very little to having far too much stuff for the available space.

Severe Disposophobics even go outside their homes and rent additional space to store their “stuff”.

In almost all cases, the value of the “stuff” is far less than the cost to store it.

70,000 Beer Cans Found in Ogden Townhouse

Posted by pjtgrizzly On July - 5 - 2010

When property manager Ryan Froerer got a call from a realtor last year to check on a townhouse, he knew something was up.

Ryan Froerer, Century 21: “Said it was the sickest thing he’s ever seen. Just unimaginable that someone could live in that.”

Inside, he took just a few snapshots to document the scene. Beer cans by the tens of thousands. Mountains of cans burying the furniture. The water and heat were shut off, apparently on purpose by the tenant, who evidently drank Coors Light beer exclusively for the eight years he lived there.

72 Snakes Found In Apartment

Posted by pjtgrizzly On July - 5 - 2010

A team from the city’s Criminal Nuisance Abatement Unit has red-tagged the apartment where officials have found 72 live snakes, at last count.

Animal welfare officials said they spent Monday afternoon at the Las Kivas Apartments on Tramway Boulevard, where they seized several reptiles and numerous snakes — most of them boa constrictors.

“It was piled high, full of trash, feces,” said unit member Vivian Gonzales.

“There were also deceased snakes that were merely thrown into a tub,” said Lt. Jay Gilhooly of the Criminal Nuisance Abatement Unit. “A number of dead rats, mice, that we would assume would normally be used to feed the snakes.”

Three children, ages 8, 6 and 2, also lived in the home. The children were sent to live with their grandparents.
